Sun Yi — ADAMS Represented Artist
Sun Yi is a U.S.-based Doctor of Musical Arts in Western percussion and an ADAMS artist active on the international percussion scene. He began piano at four and percussion at eight. In 2001, he entered the Middle School Affiliated to the Central Conservatory of Music, studying with percussion educator Zhao Ji, before pursuing undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral degrees in Singapore, Austria, and the United States.
His awards include the Special Prize in the marimba category of the sixth Fermo International Percussion Competition in Italy, First Prize at the Stony Brook Concerto Competition in New York, First Prize in the youth marimba category of the Jianli International Percussion Competition, and the Silver Prize at the third Salzburg International Marimba Competition in Austria.
Sun Yi has performed across Europe, the Americas, and Asia, and has repeatedly been invited to judge and perform at percussion festivals in China and abroad. His major appearances include a performance at Singapore’s Istana for then President S. R. Nathan; a percussion concert at Vienna’s Golden Hall; the Spain Modern Percussion Festival; the ADAMS Percussion Arts Festival in the Netherlands; the International Percussion Competition “Day of Percussion” in Italy; the Stella Arts Center in New York; and the closing ceremony of the 2022 Beijing Paralympic Winter Games, where he performed timpani for the extinguishing of the cauldron flame.
